And too many of them, left unchecked, can mean bad news for us…

Ultimately leading to oxidative stress – which can cause cellular damage, lead to both chronic and degenerative diseases, and even speed up the body’s aging process…

Leaving us that much more vulnerable to something called ‘acute pathologies’ – more commonly known as trauma and stroke.

So how do we help our body to combat and expel these harmful “Free Radicals”…?

By providing it with powerful and natural sources of free-radical defense – called Antioxidants.

The WORST Veggie for Weight Loss (never eat this)

Of course, that’s why they were called hunter gatherers…and if you go back far enough, they are in your family tree too.

Let's talk about hunting first.

WHY?

Because MEAT was the JACKPOT.  (Don't worry if you're vegan or vegetarian, keep reading... this isn't just about meat.)

The ultimate reward for a successful hunt.

MEAT not only tasted great and satisfied their hunger…but it literally kept them alive.

They didn’t know it, but the bounty from a successful hunt provided a massively nutrient-dense source of calories that would’ve been impossible to acquire anywhere else.

The truth is that ancestral hunts were long, hard work…and they weren’t always successful.

So, although hunting and eating meat was the #1 objective…

Survival of the species required some “gathering”  too.  Our ancestors knew their land. And…they knew their plants.

Your ancestors did not eat vegetables.

They had no gardens. No farmers markets. No grocery stores. No restaurants. No pantry. No fridge.

They had lean, strong, muscular bodies. No weights. No gym. No treadmill. No elliptical.

Physical activity was a part of life.

10,000 steps?

Yeah…they did that before breakfast.

Their diet?

Well, they ate TWO FOODS every chance they got.

Some plants were food.

Some plants were poison.

Some plants were medicine.

They knew which ones were which.

The historical record is clear here.

They weren’t eating spinach, kale or lettuce.  They weren’t roasting brussels sprouts.

The fact that fruit comes in beautiful colors and tastes sweet and delicious is not an accident.

Fruits are the parts of the plant that “want” to be eaten.  That’s because when animals (including humans) eat fruit, we don’t digest the seeds which means that they come out of us intact…and perfectly packaged in a pile of fertilizer that we call poop.

Those seeds then sprout into new plants and that plant goes on to live another day. Survival of the species again…Nature is awesome.

In contrast, vegetables (like leaves) don’t “want” to be eaten which is why they contain a variety of defense chemicals that make them taste bitter.  Leaves would rather stay there on the plant and do their work of producing food for the plant by photosynthesis.

Plants produce food for plants, not for animals…or humans.

That’s why most people will only tolerate eating a salad that is drenched in salad dressing or a vegetable side dish that is smothered in butter and salt.

Think about it for a minute. Our cells have specialized ports that are like tiny antennas that are finely tuned to pick up signals from the molecules that make berries dark and sweet. And when that signal comes through…we get a boost in the form of more energy, less inflammation, a stronger heart, sharper mind and increased metabolism to support weight loss.

FRUIT

Fruits, especially dark colored ones like berries, are loaded with polyphenols and other phytonutrients that have direct and dramatic effects on human health.

In fact, there are specific binding sites for these nutrients on human cell membranes…

Which ones are food.
Which ones are
 poison.
Which ones are
 medicine.

Speaking of memory…

Remember, just a few paragraphs back…I told you about how our ancestors knew which plants were edible and which ones were poisonous?

Well, I also mentioned that they knew which ones were medicine.

Ancestral life was tough and often tragically short.

No doctors. No nutritionists. No therapists. No health coaches.

In the face of illness or injury…again, they relied on the land.

I happen to be one of those medicine men.

My name is Joshua Levitt. I’m a naturopathic physician. I started my medical education at UCLA where I studied human physiology and neuroscience. I studied naturopathic and botanical medicine at Bastyr University in Seattle…and I’ve studied and trained under the wisest and most experienced physicians and healers in the world. Today, I own and run one of the largest natural medicine practices in New England.

I’ve been using these traditional, ancestral medicines in my patients for over 20 years.

I’ve seen them help people struggling with common, complex, and chronic problems.

I’ve seen them help the sickest and most challenging patients…people that were described as a “lost cause” or a “train wreck”…people that were desperate, hopeless, and considered incurable.

And today, I want to share something with you.

A super-practical slice of that ancestral wisdom…in the form of a simple list of the most important berries, botanical medicines, and medicinal mushrooms that you can use to bring back that lean, muscular, energetic, ancestral body that is deep within you.

Here is the exact “Ancestral Protocol” that will make you lean and energetic just like the ancient hunters and gatherers:

Berries:

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra):  The clusters of beautiful dark purple berries that hang from the Elderberry tree have been used to support immunity for centuries...and modern science confirms their reputation.  Elderberries contain naturally-occurring polyphenols that have been shown to inhibit viral replication, and improve immunological offense and defense. (1)

Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus): The deep blue color of bilberries comes from high concentrations of a special class of flavonoids called anthocyanins. They are powerful antioxidants and are protective against cellular aging… which explains their use in eye, heart, brain, and blood vessel health.

Goji berry (Lycium barbarum): These tasty berries have earned the nickname “red diamond” for good reason. Goji berries are an herbal superfruit that are rich in flavonoids and antioxidants that promote cardiovascular and metabolic health. (6)

Botanical Medicines:

Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea): It’s no wonder that a plant that can grow and thrive in Arctic cold can teach us something about stress and resilience. Rhodiola is a classic “adaptogen” because of its ability to improve the stress response, and promote physical and mental energy, endurance, and stamina. (3)

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera):  The translation of the name Ashwagandha means “strong as a horse” and the botanical name somnifera refers to its reputation for promoting restful sleep. Strength, stamina and sleep...sound good? (4)

Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus): Also known as Siberian ginseng which has been used for hundreds of years as a tonic to enhance physical and mental performance. Strength for memory, mind, and mood. (5)

Matcha (Camellia sinensis): Matcha is a sacred Japanese herbal powder that is made from dried green tea leaves. It is a concentrated source of chlorophyll and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which promotes a calm, focused energy and boosts metabolism for healthy weight loss. (12)

King Trumpet (Pleurotus eryngii):  It carries the name “king” because it’s the largest of the oyster mushroom species and because it’s such a powerful nutritional medicine. It is especially rich in ergothioneine and selenium which explains its beneficial immune effects. (8)

Shitake (Lentinula edodes): Not only are shiitake mushrooms a delicious and nutritious food...they are also a potent natural medicine. They contain beta-glucan and other polysaccharides that enhance immunity, prevent cellular damage from toxin exposure, and protect DNA. (9)

Lions Mane (Hericium erinaceus): Named for its shaggy appearance, Lion's Mane is another mushroom that is both a food and medicine.  It is a favorite among herbalists for the brain and nervous system where it can benefit the mind, mood, and memory. (10)

Medicinal Mushrooms:

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum): This medicinal mushroom that has been an Eastern medicine staple for centuries. It boosts immunity, targets inflammatory pathways, and stimulates detoxification. (7)

Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor): Turkey Tail mushrooms grow on decaying wood on every continent...and they are one of the most well-researched medicinal mushrooms in the world. Much of that research has investigated the effects of unique polysaccharides (like PSK and PSP) that have beneficial effects on immunity, inflammation, and gastrointestinal health. (11)

At this point, you have a few options…

I’ve already explained the secrets of these ancestral ingredients.

You could grow these plants in your garden or greenhouse.  Depending on where you live and how gren your thumb is… you might have some success and be able to get a reasonable harvest in a few years.  I’ve been working on my own herbal medicine garden here at our house for years…I’d be happy to give you some tips!

The way I see it…you have two choices.

Either of those options are great.  Growing your own food and medicine is something that I would strongly encourage you to do.  And getting out in the woods and learning the plants out there is a great way to get outside, get some exercise, and connect with nature…You should do both!

As a veteran naturopathic doctor and the medical director of a leading natural health company…I have made some good friends in high places in the natural medicine industry.

I’m connected to sources of the best quality herbal medicine ingredients on the planet. I have the resources to source, independently test, blend and manufacture these exact ingredients in the ideal ratios for maximum clinical effectiveness.

And…that’s exactly what I’ve done.  I went to great lengths to source every single ingredient in the list above…brought them all into our cGMP certified manufacturing facility, tested them all for purity and potency, and then blended them into a perfectly balanced, absolutely delicious, refreshing drink mix that dissolves into water and tastes like a berry refresher.

Because it helps people “get their mojo back”...I decided to call it Mojo Superberry and I’ve never been more proud of a product that I’ve created.

Day Date

Dr. Joshua Levitt, UpWellness®

HUNT or GATHER.

The #1 prize for a “gatherer” was...

Because, when they were hungry (and they always were)…they only had two choices:

But fruit… it’s a perfect ancestral food when meat is in short supply.

For decades, medical “experts” have vilified fruits because they contain fructose… but the science is NOT on their side.

Fruits like the ones our ancestors ate not only help with healthy weight loss, they also help increase cognitive function. Harvard researchers recently published data in the prestigious medical journal  that showed that eating these exact same fruit compounds was associated with a dramatic effect on cognitive function (memory) in American adults.

There were specific plants that helped improve energy and endurance…and others that enhanced healing and recovery.

There were specific mushrooms that increased focus and mood…and others that increased immunity.

This knowledge is what I like to call– ancestral wisdom.

Of course, the berries, medicinal plants, and mushrooms all still exist…and are actually easier to get now than they ever were in history.

The tragedy is that most people these days have no idea how to use them.

Notice that I said “most” people…thankfully, not all.

There is a small group of modern day doctors who are committed to keeping that ancestral wisdom alive. These are medicine men and women who know the land. They know the plants.

You know that if you want a lean, muscular body….
If you want smooth, steady, all-day energy…
If you want a sharp mind and memory like a steel trap…
If you want to support your heart, lungs, metabolism, immunity…

You should look closely at the list of berries, botanical medicines, and medicinal mushrooms above…

And then, think about your options.

OPTION #1:

You could learn the local plants and mushrooms from books or by joining a local foraging community.  They go on “herb walks” and foraging trips in the woods in search of food and medicine.  We do trips like this often here in New England…maybe you could come along sometime!

OPTION #2:

But, there's a third option too…and it’s the one that I think might be the most practical for you. Let me explain…

OPTION #3:

Herbs and wild mushrooms were medicine.

Introducing

Contrary to what many people believe… eating fruit (especially berries) helps people lose weight.

It’s an awesome display of nature in action… and it’s right in line with the latest science too.

Common dark colored berries like strawberries, blueberries are raspberries, are rich sources of a family of medicinal compounds called polyphenols…which are even more concentrated in some less familiar berries like elderberry, bilberry, goji berry, and açaí. Numerous studies published in peer-reviewed medical journals have demonstrated that these same polyphenols have direct anti-obesity effects.

In fact, the research on the weight loss benefits of berries has even advanced to the point where we know how they work. There are four main ways that berry superfoods help with weight loss. Here’s what the science says:

They stimulate thermogenesis… that means they increase metabolic rate and calorie burning.

They
suppress the growth of adipocytes…those are are fat cells.

They increase lipolysis and beta-oxidation… that means they
burn fat.

They
decrease appetite and cravings.

Doctor Reveals #1 Veggie To Avoid (causes weight gain, drains energy & slows muscle growth)

In addition to the powerful medicinal berries listed above, prized ancestral fruits from all over the world include:

Raspberry

Strawberry

Banana

Apple

Maqui Berry

Acai

Pineapple

Cherry

Grape

Pomegranate

Blueberry

Cranberry

Papaya

A perfect balance of sweet and tart and loaded with polyphenols…it’s no wonder that raspberries are one of the most popular berries in the world.

Botanically speaking, a banana is actually a berry! Rich in potassium with researched backed benefits for weight loss, digestion, and heart health.

Modern evidence has confirmed what our parents and grandparents always knew. An apple a day!

The concentrated bioflavonoids in the skin of blueberries are associated with reduced cardiovascular risk, improved blood sugar control, weight management, and neuroprotection.

Numerous studies have linked strawberry consumption with prevention of inflammation, reduction in oxidative stress, and reduced risk of chronic disease.

UMass Dartmouth has an entire research department devoted to the study of the health benefits of cranberries. They have benefits in the urinary tract, gums and teeth, and a growing body of science about protecting and preserving brain health.

This Brazilian superfood is not just delicious…it's intensely nutritious! Acai has stunningly high levels of polyphenols which have been shown to increase the antioxidant capacity of the blood.

The deep red pigments in pomegranate are associated with cardiovascular benefits including beneficial effects on blood pressure, blood sugar and inflammation.

Grapes are extremely high in bioactive molecules like flavonoids, anthocyanins and stilbenes which are linked to improved cardiovascular health.

This tropical superfruit is prized for its flavor but also delivers cardiovascular and digestive benefits.

The addition of cherries to the diet has been shown to reduce blood levels of markers related to inflammation. Sore joints love cherries!

The definitive source of the bioactive enzyme bromelain and a rich source of vitamins, minerals…pineapples support a healthy inflammatory response and improve digestive health.

These dark purple South American berries contain a concentrated supply of anthocyanins which have direct beneficial effects on the health of the eyes, the heart, and the skin.

Now, you might have noticed that I used the word “heavily” quite a few times just now. I also used all caps and bold  for the word BIG.  That was not an accident.

Cattle farmers have known this for decades.  Sadly, mainstream doctors haven’t yet caught on.

Corn (especially in its highly processed form) is the #1 vegetable that you must avoid if your goal is to lose weight.  It has no part in an ancestral diet…it was not even considered food for our hunter/gatherer ancestors.

They did not eat processed grains, they did not eat vegetables as we know them today…in fact,

Corn makes humans and animals BIG and HEAVY.

And, they certainly weren’t harvesting or processing…corn.

Modern corn is a mutant grain that is heavily subsidized, heavily hybridized, heavily fertilized, heavily sprayed with pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides…and then heavily processed into high fructose corn syrup and other byproducts that are the darlings of
BIG FOOD.
